A carrera track, two ergometers and two VR headsets - from these ingredients and a good pinch of inventive energy, we developed a very special mixed reality experience for the world premiere of VW's new ID.Buzz, which impresses and touches on both a digital and analog level.
The technical and visual centerpiece of the exhibit is a reduced landscape model measuring approximately 3x2m. In addition to stylized trees and buildings, the approximately waist-high table features an extensive circuit, which on closer inspection turns out to be a classic Carrera race track.
However, the familiar racing cars from the children's room are not driving here: instead, the two variants of the new ID.Buzz are doing their laps on the typical contact tracks of the Carrera track as true-to-original and roadworthy miniatures. Beloved evergreen meets future-oriented technology, that could be the maxim.
The table has a futuristic, clear design, an LED strip emphasizes the edges and the striking lettering "ID.Future Drive" names the clear vision behind the exhibit.
But of course that's not all: two platforms are docked to the right and left of the table. On each of these is a seat with a pedal box in front of it and a view of the model landscape. These ergometers communicate with the track via an interface, allowing visitors to actively and significantly influence what happens on the track. By pedaling on one of the two stations, the corresponding ID.Buzz model moves forward.
But as mentioned at the beginning, the "ID.Future Drive" is not least a VR installation. There is a VR headset behind each of the two seats, which adds a whole new dimension to the experience.
As the driver of either the People ID or the Cargo ID, users get an impressive insight into the features, driving comfort and functionality of the futuristic van in VR.
The intuitive control of the experience is achieved by focusing on activation fields in VR - and via the pedals of the ergometer. On the one hand, the pedal force drives the vehicle both in VR and on the model track. On the other hand, it is used as a gamification event in VR - e.g. at the Wallbox ID.Charger or the IONITY charging station - to charge the battery of the ID.Buzz. Sustainable drive technology has rarely been so tangible!
From your own garage to the atmospheric sunset, the experience offers a fascinating user journey that ultimately culminates in an impressive finale. The path of the ID.Buzz takes users through the futuristic, intelligent city of the future, where they encounter an autonomous MOIA, a group of Starship delivery robots and wind turbines on the horizon. Users are explicitly introduced to the features of ID.Buzz via special events along the journey.
Whether it's the aforementioned ID.Wall Charger directly before setting off from your own garage, Adaptive Distance Control to save you from a supposed rear-end collision or the integration of Traffic Light Info Online as the basis for the most efficient and safest possible driving style.
ID.Future Drive is a multi-layered immersive experience that stands out conceptually and effectively engages visitors cognitively and physically.
And so the spectators in the VW Commercial Vehicles pavilion can also enjoy a perfectly synchronized mixed media experience. This is because, in addition to the VR, two so-called "second screens" are installed above the table, which reproduce the experience of the current drivers 1:1 and thus allow the environment to participate in the fascinating journey through the future of mobility.
