Digital Drive Train Services

Siemens, Hannover Messe

Retro future arcade game

Siemens Digital Drive Train Services is a predictive system that helps operators of industrial plants to detect future faults or even failures of individual drive trains at an early stage. This can significantly increase the performance and safety of industrial processes.

Our challenge in this project was to make these connections playful and thus emotionally tangible in the trade fair context in order to reach the widest possible audience. The advantages of intelligent condition monitoring were to be communicated in an exciting and informative way.

The result was an entertaining action mini game with an addictive factor, in which users navigate a virtual system in classic arcade style to avoid impending technical failures.
Skill and an overview are required - and above all speed. Because if too many components of the system are out of order at the same time, it's "Game Over" - just like in real life.

As the level progresses, however, the DDTS system comes to the players' aid more and more, and it becomes immediately apparent how much easier and more effectively the system can be managed if impending failures can be detected at an early stage.

In the game as well as in real operation, DDTS means: higher efficiency and therefore a higher "score" at the end of the day. Complex technical relationships are thus broken down to a playful level and made intuitively tangible.

The user experience is rounded off by LEDs on the sides of the exhibit that rotate in line with the driving speed and gameplay and so-called "rumble packs" in the driver's seat for haptic feedback. The dynamic lighting also served as a striking eye-catcher for interested trade fair visitors.
The exhibit furniture itself was deliberately kept simple in order to integrate seamlessly into the visual concept of the Siemens hall. Only the LEDs arranged in a circle hint at the gaming experience inside through the design analogy to the game vehicle.

The look and feel of the game is clearly based on legendary classics, the atmospheric 3D world impresses with a timeless retro-futurism in the style of TRON, for example.
It's no coincidence that an analog arcade controller with the obligatory joystick was chosen for the controller. A specially produced soundtrack and dynamic sound design complete the experience.
