"NEW 4.0 - Norddeutsche EnergieWende" - under this motto, 60 partners from business, science and politics wanted to explore what the energy system of the future could look like.
The main aim of the initiative was to raise public awareness and acceptance of the urgent issue of the energy transition.
To this end, we worked with Ligalux and MKT AG to develop an interactive AR exhibit, which used the NEW 4.0 model region as an example to convey the opportunities and challenges of the energy transition.
Designed as a resilient traveling exhibit, our "AR-Table" - measuring around 4x2m - was used at almost 50 locations throughout northern Germany after its ceremonial unveiling in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.
The basis for the informative AR installation was a modular table consisting of 4 individual elements, each measuring 1x2m. Combined, they depicted the geography of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, the NEW 4.0 model region.
Relevant buildings with recognition value, as well as cities and towns, were arranged as oversized 3D prints on this landscape, including a total of six so-called hotspots, which could be explored via four swiveling monitors at the edge of the table.
These four augmented reality stations allowed visitors to playfully explore the challenges facing the energy supply of tomorrow and how they can be overcome.
The multi-touch interface of the displays also allowed the model to be explored in depth: six themed landmarks guided visitors through the energy system of the future. Each selected hotspot started with a short, interactive AR animation to convey the basic knowledge of the topic in a playful way.
These basics can then be explored in greater depth and interesting facts and background information on the respective station can be accessed in the form of scrolling texts and animated infographics.
To ensure that the physical landscape and software-based virtual AR content are synchronized to the millimeter, high-precision rotary encoders were installed in the axes of the monitors and the data was processed with correspondingly fine-tuned programming.
The result was a multi-layered and convincing AR experience with high information and entertainment value.
Even beyond the hotspots, the AR displays revealed a wide range of details on the map. Whether a freighter on its way through the Kiel Canal or a flock of passing wild geese, there was a lot to discover in the NEW 4.0 model region.
In order to convey the energy transport in a comprehensible way, the supply routes in the region were depicted using LEDs embedded in the table.
Various power supply scenarios from the producer to the consumer could be displayed via software control.
Another, larger display at the head end of the AR table presented the image film of the "Norddeutsche Energiewende" initiative and also served as an administration and content management console for the stand personnel.
Due to the high physical load caused by frequent assembly and disassembly and in order to be able to compensate for any resulting shifts in the construction, we have integrated a maintenance mode into the software in order to be able to fine-tune the physical model and superimposed AR if necessary.
After the ceremonial unveiling in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the AR table went on the "NEW 4.0 Roadshow": the exhibit reached a large number of curious visitors at almost 50 locations throughout northern Germany and the topic of the energy transition was communicated in an impressive and sustainable way.
