Westfälische Universität Münster
For the Geologisches Museum Münster, we developed an interactive touch table experience that seamlessly blends the physical and digital realms. This project reimagines the museum's mineral collection, transforming it into an engaging, hands-on digital exploration.
At the heart of the installation is a large touch table that serves as a digital twin of the museum's wall-mounted mineral display. Visitors can effortlessly swipe through a vast array of stunning, high-resolution images of the exhibits, allowing them to appreciate the intricate details of each specimen. The intuitive interface enables users to zoom in on specific minerals, revealing their complex structures and unique characteristics with unprecedented clarity.
Tapping on a specimen brings up fascinating facts about its composition, origin, and geological significance. This layered approach to information delivery caters to both casual visitors and geology enthusiasts, providing an educational experience tailored to various levels of interest and expertise.
As users explore the digital collection on the touch table, the lighting in the corresponding wall-mounted display case responds in real-time. When a particular mineral is selected on the touch interface, the physical specimen is highlighted in the display, creating a connection between the digital and physical realms. This synchronized lighting effect not only guides visitors to the actual specimens but also creates an immersive, interactive atmosphere throughout the exhibition space.
In addition to the digital mineral catalogue, the experience also included an interactive crystallisation simulator in which the chemical principle of salt crystallisation was explained. A small and playful excursion into the exemplary history of the formation of the minerals exhibited here.
The overall result is a dynamic, engaging experience that breathes new life into the Geologisches Museum Münster's mineral collection. By bridging the gap between traditional museum displays and digital technology, we've created an informative journey through the fascinating world of mineralogy, inspiring curiosity and wonder in visitors of all ages.
