From Vacuum Cleaners to Interactive Art
Being specialized in interactive experiences, our studio faced the challenge of reliable and cost-effective crowd tracking for large-scale interactive projects. We found an innovative solution by repurposing sensors from robot vacuum cleaners, transforming them into effective tracking devices.
This approach offers reliable ID tracking without concealment, high accuracy through multiple asynchronous sensors, and cost-effective scalability.
To optimize performance, we developed custom software using VL, our favourite visual live-programming environment. This software allowed us to synchronize the sensors and process captured data in real-time, ensuring seamless integration.
We showcased this technology in a large-scale interactive LED wall installation. The sensors tracked visitor movements, which directly influenced the dynamic visuals on the wall. The system's ability to track multiple individuals simultaneously enabled complex interactions, with immediate and intuitive visual feedback enhancing the immersive experience.
This project not only highlighted our innovative tracking solution but also opened new avenues for interactive art. By combining repurposed technology with advanced programming, we addressed challenges in crowd interaction and set the stage for future explorations in this exciting field.
We look forward to discovering new applications that push the boundaries of interactive experiences in public art and installations - being it crowd tracking, depth sensing or large scale touch interaction.
