Jung von Matt, Haus der Zukunft
For the 2017 Bundestag elections, Jung von Matt worked with various partners to design the "House of the Future" - a walk-in election program designed to give visitors an understanding of the CDU's content.
Numerous interactive installations filled the building in Berlin's trendy Prenzlauer Berg district, attracting interested visitors for four weeks.
Our contribution to this political world of experience: the CDU "Zukunftsspiegel" (future mirror)- a 6x3m 4K LED wall in which visitors could reflect themselves and express their personal mood: "Take a look in the future mirror and share with us how you look into the future" was the corresponding slogan.
The special thing about the personal future mirror image: the faces of the people were replaced by our software with animated emojis - analogous to the current facial expression and/or posture.
Thanks to the software integration of SHORE(TM), an algorithm from the Fraunhofer Institute, we were able to carry out precise facial expression interpretation for up to 30 faces simultaneously and in real time.
In combination with the gesture recognition of Microsoft's Kinect2 technology, this resulted in almost 20 different emojis, which could be triggered by the facial expressions and gestures of the interacting users.
Using the depth image of the installed 3D camera, we were also able to precisely limit the area to be scanned in order to elegantly separate the action area from the passive audience area and thus rule out tracking errors.
In addition to the popular classics, there were also some original creations among the emojis, so that initiated users were even able to conjure up a chancellor emoji on their face - obviously by depicting the well-known trademark of the German chancellor, "the rhombus".
A small feature, but one that was great fun for the audience - especially when it was discovered by chance while trying it out - and triggered a correspondingly high level of engagement.
Which of the many emojis was the most popular with the public, i.e. which was created most frequently each day, could be followed in parallel on a second screen - where all the variants were displayed in a dynamic emoji cloud and changed their size and position within the cloud depending on their occurrence.
The emoji of the day was distributed via the social media channels every evening of the four weeks.
